Rick Grimes is a former Sheriff's deputy who has been in a coma for several months after being shot while on duty. When he wakes, he discovers that the world has been taken over by zombies, and that he seems to be the only person still alive. After returning home to discover his wife and son missing, he heads for Atlanta to search for his family. Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the zombies on arrival in Atlanta, he is aided by another survivor,Glenn,who takes Rick to a camp outside the town. There,Rick finds his wife Lori and his son,Carl, along with his partner/best friend Shane and a small group of survivors who struggle to fend off the zombie hordes; as well as competing with other survivor groups who are prepared to do whatever it takes to survive.

Why I have chosen the series?

I have chosen the series ‘The Walking dead’ because I really like the depth of make-up created throughout the series and I feel it would be really interesting for me to create something like that. There is multiple characters and each zombie throughout the series looks different and I could get really creative with the zombie make-up. The walking dead is also one of my favourite series’ to watch, I find the story line really interesting and there’s always something new happening during the zombie apocalypse which would be amazing to create a character to fit into the story.

The main location for the series is set in the state of Georgia, US. The group of survivors work their way around Atlanta, which is the capital of Georgia. Later on some of the group start heading for Washington, D.C and a few start travelling to Richmond, Virginia. The location varies depending on the storyline as they keep moving around and camp in different areas. Many of the locations are on roads however other locations include churches, forests, mountain and a prison, etc.

Audience Demographics-

The demographic for The Walking Dead falls into the bracket of 18-49 years and the majority are women. AMC’s Season 3 finale of The Walking Dead premiered delivering its largest audience ever with 12.4 million viewers and 8.1 million being adults 18-49 years, making the series the number one programme for the night and the week for total viewers. The series’ season average is also number one in this category. In just three seasons, The Walking Dead became a pop-culture phenomenon, entertaining millions of passionate viewers.

Why is it appealing?

The way the series is set, even though we all know it as a zombie apocalypse during the series you never here the characters call them zombies, it’s like before the apocalypse no-one knew any of that could happen and the name ‘zombie’ was never around to them so they were just the unknown. Words used for them are walkers, roamers, lurkers, geeks, biters, skin eaters and many more. A lot of people like the relationship between the group of surviving people, they all stick together like family and it’s always very hard when they lose one of them. This brings the connection between humans and shows the emotions and feelings of individuals when they lose someone they love. Also the fact that people seem like main characters however eventually get killed off when you’d least except it, shows the reality of what could happen in an apocalypse, not everyone makes it all the way however new survivors always join. This gives the group a variety of different people especially when meeting new people with different skills sets which helps make the group stronger. Each character has different personality traits therefore gaining a wide demographic as you can relate to different characters in different ways.

Throughout the seasons time is referenced a lot. Stopwatches and clocks are always being shown, they have a fascination with time. The character Carl starts off very young and helpless however he gets older as the seasons progress, learning to shoot and the audience grow with him. The reason the show is so appealing is due to its realistic characteristics. Other shows may be less successful because of there unrealistic story lines, The Walking Dead gives an accurate portrayal on events that may happen if a zombie apocalypse may occur. They create an entire fictional world using make-up to depict levels of decay, utilising time to build a history behind present day.
