Introduction to my Claudia

Claudia fits into the series when the group of survivors reach the Alexandria Safe-Zone in the Episode ‘The Distance’. Alexandria is a walled-off community which is located in Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Claudia is one of the residences in the safe-zone, she has locked herself inside her house and has no contact with the rest of the group. She fantasises about being the main character in her favourite horror films, unfortunately she no longer needs to pretend as she’s living in a real life zombie apocalypse. She has agoraphobia which is an anxiety disorder. She starts going crazy and starts self harming and begins wondering where her imaginary ‘boyfriend’ is and why he hasn't visited her. This is an element I have added to the character to fit her into the setting in a more believable manner.

She keeps in touch with the rest of the group by her neighbour who is also a survivor. Darkness falls and everyone is in their houses sleeping when a zombie approaches Claudia’s door. Claudia instantly hears the noise and opens the door to the zombie, she is completely delusional and psychotic and thinks the zombie is Quentin. She then lets him in even though he is grabbing at her and trying to bite her however being naïve she believes it is in a playful way and wants to make sure he cant ever leave her again so she ties him up and due to her lack of contact with the group no-one knows she is keeping him there.

Due to the audiences largest proportion being women they will relate to Claudia on an emotional level. Many women have experienced some form of Claudia’s character therefore they’ll be more sympathetic to her situation. Being in her early 20’s the older viewers will aspire to have physical traits.

My Key word for development-

I chose the key word glass prison because not only is she in a physical prison in the world she is living in. She is also in a mental prison to herself because of her state of mind and thoughts. It has inspired me to investigate how other leading characters that are women suffer from similar disorders and how they’re presented in modern literature.

Looking into how women are described in books, due to not having a visual reference, language is used very poetically to portray women.

The scene Claudia will be in is just after when the main group of survivors reach Alexandria, Claudia doesn't appear out in the day time because she doesn't leave her house. When the gates to Alexandria are accidently left open a walker comes into the community, when the walker appears at Claudia door she opens it thinking he is Quentin. She brings the walker into her house mistaking him for her imaginary boyfriend. She then keeps him tied up in her house where no one knows. The setting of where Claudia is during the scene is in her house because where she has an anxiety disorder she and is unsociable so she never leaves her house. I want to style Claudia as quite a typical young girl in her 20’s with brunette hair. If you looked at her she would look like just any average 20 year old girl however with her lack of horror films and communication she has cuts over her body where she self harms. Her hair is scraggly and her body, face and clothes are dirty from the lack of washing, her lips are dry and sore, probably bleeding.

I want to develop Claudia further, creating charts and designs for her hands, body and clothing so the whole look is brought together. Before creating Claudia I want to practise the look so I know I can create it and what it will look like when shooting. I also need to find a model for Claudia.

Claudia Character Mood board and colour palette
In my mood board representing Claudia I chose a variety of images which I best thought would portray Claudia. I started off with a picture of a young woman in her 20's as this is base line of what Claudia looks like; typical average girl. The next along represents how she self harms and is psychotic therefore cutting herself with glass. The next image is a photo of one of the characters from the walking dead about to attack another this is to represent I certain situations and lifestyle you can turn slightly crazy and be unknown to what you are doing. The next image is of a girl holding a knife, this is to portray how crazy she is physically and has that look in her eye. The next one is a young woman who is a character in The Walking Dead series overall I have gathered inspiration from this photo physically because of the ways she looks ie slightly messy hair and dirty skin, showing she hadn't washed. The next image is inspiration for the cut she will have on her neck. The photo of the house is what her house would look like in the safe-zone; boarded up. The photos of the 5 women at the bottom are characters from the series, I used this photo as inspiration for overall looks such as the clothing, weapons and getting and idea of what they would look like during an apocalypse.

Make-up chart
This was the face chart I created for my first initial idea for Claudia. When gathering the images for the mood board it helped me create an idea for Claudias look. I wanted the base of the make-up very simple and natural so you cant tell she's wearing make-up as it is an apocalypse. On the neck I wanted scratches/cuts going up as this is where she self harms, on the face I wanted it slightly dirty and hot looking since its warm season and there is limited water. I wanted a slight bruises and cut on her cheek because where she is delusional she sometimes blacks out and she's hurt herself. The hair is mid length and brown, its slightly wavy and a little dirty/greasy. I have decided if I want half the hair tied up in a knot or just to leave it completely down.
