Final Claudia Make-up and Hair

THE WALKING DEAD
Claudia

 How I created it

Make-up-
Products:

 • Illamasqua primer
 • Charles Fox Foundation
 • MAC Prep and prime CC powder
 • Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess
 • Charles Fox mini lip palette (nude)
 • Vaseline
 • Rimmel brow pencil
 • Ben Nye Bruise wheel
 • Bloody Scab
 • Johnson baby oil
 • Charles Fox blush palette

 1. I started with the base of the face which is firstly to prime the skin. Once primed I used a mix of two colour from the Charles Fox foundation palette and did a light but flawless coverage.
 2. I then powdered the skin, I used the MAC prep and prime CC powder as this reduces redness of the face which gives a neutral look to the skin. I then used the Estee Lauder Bronzer to go over the whole face and slightly contour more on the cheeks.
 3. For the lips I wanted it very subtle so I used a nude colour and Vaseline and mixed them together, applied on the lips and asked my model to rub her lips together.
 4. Next was the brows, which I used a brown pencil and slightly drew them in just to define them a little more.
 5. For the lashes I was going to apply mascara however my model had inserted eyelash extensions so I couldn't put anything on them however the extension made them long and dark anyway.
 6. I then used the red from the bruise wheel and applied it under the eye close to the waterline. I then used the same red and used it on the neck to make the area look red as this is where the scratched will be.
 7. Next I used the bloody scab to paint on scratch marks on the skin and then went back to the bruise wheel and used the green and blue to go around the scratches slightly.
 8. As I wanted the skin to look dirty I used a dark brown colour from the blush palette and applied dirt marks to the skin. Finally before shooting the look I applied baby oil to the T zone of the face to make her look slightly sweaty.

Hair-
Equipment:

 • Hair Brush
 • pin tail comb
 • Medium sized curlers
 • hairspray
 1. I started with completely brushing the hair, and the section the hair in half using the comb and tied the top half up
 2. I then used the curling tongs which I preheated and then started curling random bits.
 3. I then took the next section down, curled it all and then the final part and curled it.
 4. Finally I separated the curl and hair sprayed the hair and then back combed parts of it.

Final Evaluation
On the day of the assessment I felt confident in creating the look for Claudia's Character. The make-up and hair all went to plan on the day and achieved the look in the allocated time frame of the studio session including photography my model at the end. In the end I decided to go with the curly natural hair as I thought it suited my character better than a messy french plait. I really enjoyed creating Claudia and even though her look is much simpler than my Quentin I feel I have been able to show a variety of skills through my character. I enjoyed researching and creating Claudia, I think her character is very interesting and I feel it portrays and represents the women characters in the walking dead series. I really thought about the styling, clothing and make-up due to the fact the character lives during a apocalypse so I based it on that, I also went in depth studying the other women characters in the series to make sure her look, looks realistic and fits within the series. I'm certainly happy with the outcome of the look, however when photography I think it could of been a little darker lighting so it gives a moody effect, however when trying out some edits on Photoshop I put a tint on and darkened the image slightly. I also put a background on my edit and included the walking dead title and her name which all contributed to the final look and I'm really pleased with the edit I created. Overall I think could of made the skin a little more dirty looking and maybe brought the cuts around to the front of the neck so you could see them face on.

Claudia: Final Mood board

In correspondence to our characters we had to create a mood board for each of the characters we created. The first one I did was Claudia and this was inspiration mood board for her, I chose I a variety of images that I thought best visually portrayed Claudia. The women on the bottom left is visual inspiration for her look such as styling and the clothing which is khaki colour. The wired fence is to show she is trapped and feels like she in a prison, physically and mentally. The house in the background is the place she is, surrounded by nothing, gives you that feeling of the unknown and emptiness. The women on the middle right is hair reference, natural curly hair. The top picture which is the eyes portarys fear through what we can see, its also a make-up reference as the make-up will be plain and simple like the eyes with red slightly underneath as shes slightly crazy. The photo on the top left shows cuts and blood as Claudia will have cuts on her neck from being irritated and self harming as she scratches at her own neck.

Claudia: Face chart & Hair Trials

Here I have created my final Face chart for Claudia's make-up looks. The base of the make-up with be a even light coverage with powder to set it and bronzer on the face to contour with and for a slight bronzed effect. Then on the tip will be a nude colour with Vaseline for a natural look, the eyes with have a think layer of mascara to lengthen the lashes and darken them and under the eye will be a red gel smudged slighly. The brows with be slightly filled in so they look natural and using a bruise wheel and bloody scab create bruising on the neck and scratches.Last face look slightly dirty and sweaty so using the brown from the blush palette to create dirt on the skin and baby oil of the forehead/nose/chin to create a sweaty look.

Hair Trials

French Plait:

In the walking dead series their hairstyles aren't very elaborate because they don't have proper styling equipment or products. Therefore a design I would have to do would be something a natural looking to suit my character. I had two different ideas of what I could do on my character Claudia. The first was a French plait, this style is good because its easy to do and looks realistic to the situation. The french plait would be messy and slightly falling out with a few strands hanging down. The top would be parted on the side and join at the back creating one plait.

Curly Hair:

I wanted to try natural curly hair as a possible style for my Claudia character. I started with brushing the hair thoroughly and then curling the whole head with medium sized tongs as I didn't want them to be tight curls. Once the whole head was curled I brushed through it with my fingers and and gave it a bit of volume and then sprayed it with hair spray to set.

Out of the two designs Iv'e practiced for Claudia's character I prefer the curly style because I think it will suit her better. I think the style is more loose and casual which fits in better with the series and her character instead of a plait which takes more time to do so the naturally curly hair looks more realistic.

Garments

I wanted the clothing to fit into the rest of the character series so when I studying Claudia and the women characters in the series there was a pattern in there clothing.. they all wore similar colours and styles. The colours consists of brown, khaki, nude, green, black. The style would normally either be a strappy top and maybe with a cardigan and long sleeved top. Therefore when I went shopping looking for clothing I came around this long sleeved khaki coloured top which was perfect. Luckily it was in Primark and was only £3.50. Bargain.

Quentin Experimentation

Experiment One

I wanted to experiment with trying out different parts of the make-up and where I could place the prosthetic pieces on the face.

Products:
 • Latex
 • Oats
 • Blood
 • Bloody scab
 • Tissue
 • Supra colour
 • ( tried gelatine)

 1. Firstly I started with the wound on the forehead where in a bowl I mixed Latex and oats together, I then used a spatula to mix it up and put it on the forehead. Once on the forehead I then used a sponge to layer latex over the area where I placed the oats to make sure it blends with the skin and holds on the face.

 1. While the latex and oats were drying I started on the nose area when I used a sponge to create a layer of latex over the nose, I then Ripped a piece of tissue off making sure the edges were all torn and placed it over the latex and then applied another layer of latex on top.
 2. While this was drying I went back to the oats on the forehead and then used my supra colour palette to apply colour to the area. I started with black, white and green on the area and then added the bloody scab which is like a thick blood paste that sets hard and then I added runny blood over the top and for it to drip down the face slightly.
 3. For the nose I added the same colour as the tissue makes the skin bumpy and dry and the colour give the off-skin colour effect.
Attempt and Fail:

I wanted to practise making and using gelatine on the face so I went to Asda and bought bakery gelatine which it works the same. I got a tub out and poured a small amount of hot (not boiling) water and then slowly started adding the gelatine to the mix and stiring it in. On the package it said if the granules haven't melted in just heat it up for a little bit until they dissolve completely in. After it all had dissolved I thought the gelatine would be quite thick (paste like) because I put half amount of water in or maybe less however it was super runny and wasn't setting at all. I tried applying it to the face and it just literlly just dripping off the face and wasn't building up at all. I evenutlly stopped trying and though I will go back to Asda and buy the other forms of gelatine to see how they work and test them before applying to the face.

Experiment two

On my second attempt I pre made some gelatine to use on the ace hoping this technique will work. I used the same getaline granules however put even less water. I searched online ways to make it thicker and it said adding either glycerine or honey to the mix. Firstly I tried adding glycerine to it and then left the mix on the side, I went back 10 minutes later and it was set. I then pulled the gelatine mold out and cut into squares and kept it in a sealed container. When applying it on my model I put 2 of the cubes in a plastic cup and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds. Once it has melted it was still very runny however it was much more manageable. I then started applying it on the face and it was setting much better and building it up on the face.

Creating the look:

 1. Firstly I started with the latex and oats again on the head just so I got another try at creating it. I made sure I applied another layer of latex over the top so it all sticks to the forehead and the lump blend into the head.
 2. I then started with the gelatine on the side of the face, I started on the cheek and started building it up as the gelatine became thicker and started drying. I then used a hairdryer on cool (as you don't want to melt it again) to dry the product and latex area.
 3. Once the side of the face had all the base prosthetics I started applying the surpa colour palette paint to the face. When researching how to create look like this I found a video clip on Youtube of the make-up artist from the walking dead creating a look. After applying the gelatine, latex and oats he used a mix of colour and oil on the face to make it blend into the skin and give even thin coverage. I tried this myself mixing the colour and oil and it worked really well on the skin.
 4. Once the whole face was coloured which I used white and green to make the skin look ill I then powdered the face.
 5. Next I used a spatula and picked the gelatine on the cheek to create creators in the skin and started filling it in with the blood paste and around the oats. I then used a liquid blood and started dripping it down the face and putting random splashes of blood over the face.
I think the gelatine went much better this time when pre making the mix and heating it up. The hairdryer made the process much faster as I dried the product much quicker. I was much happier with how this look came out and I think the over coverage looked good. I really liked the lumpy skin effect with oats and the gelatine makes the skin much more bumpy and uneven. I liked pulling away at the gelatine and filling it in with blood as it looked much more realistic. I think I need to tone down on the green supra colour on the face as I only want a hint of green not for his face to look completely green.

I really liked the tissue effect on the nose in the first experiment as it wrinkles the skin up and gives a dry latex affect to the skin. On the final look I want to apply the oats on the forehead, the gelatine over the rest of the face, down the neck and the ears and tissue over the nose as I liked the effect of it. I also tried making gelatine with honey in it however I was very sticky and the feeling of it wasn't very nice. I also bought the powdered gelatine however It didn't set a good as the granules so I preferred that one. I also bought the gelatine leaf sheet however I didn't end up trying that as I was happy with the gelatine granules and the glycerine mix.

Claudia:
Claudia's Character is a survivor from the outbreak of the deadly virus which turns friends and family into mindless killing zombie who only crave the livings blood and flesh. Claudia is a female character in her 20's who is living inside the walls of Alexandria safe zone. Above I looked into different female character in the Walking Dead so I could gather visual inspiration for her character and how to portray her.

She locks herself up inside her house and has no contact with the rest of the group because she doesn't like leaving her room. She fantasises about being the main character in her favourite horror films, unfortunately she no longer needs to pretend as she’s living in a real life zombie apocalypse. She has agoraphobia which is an anxiety disorder. She starts going crazy and self harms herself, she is known from the rest of the group for being slightly weird and unsociable. She looks no different from the other women and is an average looking pretty girl however does give herself bodily harm.

In this photograph of five of the female surviving characters I have studied what they look like ie. there hair styles, which most of them are down or if they are up they are quite messy. There hair would clearly be natural as they have no styling products or equipment, if tied up its normally either with something they've found or a clip/hairband they've had on them all along. This helps me thing of the range of hair styles that Claudia could have and the limits to her design. I've also looked at there outfits which the colour variation is very little in this photo as they all tend it have, brown, khaki, beige which run along the neutral palette and greens. They're all wearing trousers and have either a strappy top on and maybe a jacket/cardigan over it. They all look quite worn out and its hot weather so there complexion looks shiny and there skin is all slightly dirty. There wouldn't have been any make-up worn during the apocalypse as there wouldn't be any access to products however for the character you would apply a natural looking make-up which would be unnoticeable to the eye.

I feel the character that relates most to Claudias look will be the character Maggie Greene. I think her features are very natural and pretty and fits the ideal look for my character. I think the above photos shows the standard look for the surviving women in the walking dead because it shows her hair down and naturally wavy and very little make-up on. She looks hot and slightly dirty as washing is limited. The additional makeup I will add to Claudia would be how she self harms so she will have cuts/scratches on herself.

First Practise:

 Claudia

I experimented with creating mt Claudia Character on myself at home, for the look I kept the make-up really simple and kept the hair natural. I started with the base make-up which I applied minimal foundation, powdered the face and then contoured the face slightly with bronzer. I then filled the brows in with a brown pencil and put one layer of black mascara on the top lashes, and on the lips were a mix of a pink/red colour and Vaseline. For dirt on the face on body I used two different browns and uses a blusher brush to apply over the body and then uses glycerine on the chest and face to give a sweaty look, I think next time I will try baby oiling the skin to give the hot look. For hair after washing it I left it dry natural wavy, then brushed through it slightly and then hair sprayed it into place. I also tried experimenting creating scratches on the neck with a product called bloody scab, it a gel blood and dries forming a scab. I also used a bruise wheel and created slight bruising around the cuts.
