'The Walking Dead' Surreal Zombie World Behind the Scenes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZxOXeHvmTA
A presenter goes on set with the walking dead cast and finds out how they create the zombie looks and get one created on himself. He also speaks to well-known make-up artist Greg Nicotero where hes shows him prosthetic pieces and gets to speak to the actors on set.

“The Walking Dead,” which is heading into its fifth season, has had legions of fans hooked from the beginning, not just because of the gore and heart-stopping plot lines, but how terrifyingly real the zombies appear to be.
The show has won two Emmys for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup and a lot of thought goes into the gruesome looks for each “walker,” as zombies on the show are called. Eulyn Womble, the show’s costume stylist, believes the clothes tell a character’s back story.
“The costumes have changed throughout the season,” Womble said. “The first season was in the city so lots of suits and ties and skirts, shorter skirts, and then when we got into the country, longer dresses more bad... patterns, definitely different from the city.
When the costume stylist and her team get new clothes, they will stretch them out, add rips, dirt, make-up and stain them with fake blood of different colors and thicknesses.
“I do like blood a little bit too much,” Womble said, laughing. “This is my favorite part. Sometimes [executive producer] Greg [Nicotero] is like, ‘that’s enough, why does she have that much blood?’”
If they need more clothes, Womble and her team will buy pieces from whatever local stores are nearby. “We buy everywhere, from Goodwill to Saks, depending on what they’re doing to do,” she said.
But a big challenge for the costume stylist is that the show’s fans “watch everything,” Womble said, so she won’t put anyone in the same outfit twice. Character looks are meticulously tweaked, down to tarnishing buttons that are “too shiny,” to appease “Walking Dead’s” very active fans – the show’s official Instagram account has almost 800,000 followers, and its Twitter account, almost three million followers.
“We get Instagrammed and Twitter questions about the littlest thing,” Womble said. “Our fans are incredible. They keep us on our toes.”
Drawers upon drawers of latex foam and prosthetics add-ons line the make-up area on set. Nicotero said all of the show’s prosthetics – from fake zombie bites and “zombie rot” to fake bullet wounds to “full zombie face” -- are manufactured in Los Angles and shipped to the shooting locations.
“So if you want to do a full face zombie … you have the bone structure, you have the small rotted nose, you have bits of decomposition, there’s a jaw bone sticking out,” Nicotero said, pointing to various pieces laid out in one of the drawers.
And all those wounds? Those are applied like temporary tattoos.
“These are like those tattoos you just wet, you put it on transfer paper and spritz it and peel the paper off and it transfers,” Nicotero said.
“We’ve spent five years acquiring different sculptures and different molds,” he added. “And you know the exciting thing about what we do is every person that comes in the trailer, it’s a new canvas.”
Although the number of zombies the make-up and costume teams work on every day varies depending on what the script calls for, how elaborate a character’s look has to be depends on their camera time, said make-up artist Jake Garber. So, for example, so-called “hero make-up” means the character will have a lot of close shots and needs lots of detailed features.
“We’ll give it an hour and a half and this character will eventually have teeth, contacts and styled hair,” he said.

Quentin: Facial Prosthetic Research and Zombie ageing

The Walking Dead: Zombie make up tips

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhB6NYPo2Sw

When researching previous looks for how to create a zombie look from the walking dead I came across this video on YouTube which is created by the Walking dead crew. In the video makeup artist Greg Nicotero who is consulting producer and special EFX makeup and Andy Schoneberg who is special effects makeup artist demonstrate a look that is easy to make with homemade products and products you can buy from a supermarket and is at reasonable value. This is perfect for a student like me if I can't splash out on the cash on all profession special effect products. I found this video very useful and gives me a variety of products I could use myself when creating my own zombie.

Screen shot of the final point of creating the look

Products used:
 • conditioner (greasy hair)
 • Latex
 • stipple sponge
 • white powder
 • hair dryer
 • instant oatmeal
 • Geletine
 • Spatula
 • Cosmetic sponge
 • Tissue
 • Sponges
 • Pale base colour
 • Mineral oil
 • Dark colours for shadowing (black/grey)
 • Unnatural green/yellow colour
 • Blood (can be made with food colouring and corn syrup)
 • Firm paint brush

Quentin:
I feel when researching and looking into clips of the process of how to create looks and the application. I found the videos that were created by the Walking Dead channel which showed the make-up artists creating looks on the actors and the steps of the process. I found the first video I watched at the top extremely helpful when researching how you can create the zombie look because it explained steps of how to create it and also home made products. I feel this research has really helped narrow my idea down and also helped me with the selection of products I will need to complete the look. Also how the video shows how to create lumpy skin with oatmeal and latex which gives me ideas of how to I could try and create my own products with food items which saves money on rather than buying professional all products and the budget being high.

Zombies Progression:

The Walking Dead's walkers are rotting corpses controlled by a brain which manages - somehow - to reanimate itself...

But their bodies are still decomposing.

This is what showrunner Glen Mazzara said about them:

"A walker would not starve to death, but the corpse would continue to rot so over months it would probably rot and fall apart... As we continue from season to season and those months turn into years, we do think that the older walkers would continue to deteriorate. But now we learn that anybody who dies becomes a walker so there would always be new walkers — fresh walkers."
You might assume that technical accuracy on the AMC show would come second to zombies getting smashed with crow bars and crazed survivors shooting aimlessly at each other from abandoned locations. However, the show's producer, Greg Nicotero, wants those corpses to decompose - and he damn well wants them to do so realistically.

Apparenty, he "has the show's makeup team pay special attention to how the zombies' skin has been affected by heat and dehydration, considering that unlike the show's target audience, the undead hordes spend most of their time outside."

Season 1

Season Ones little girl, still has mostly human features however the eyes have changed, a cut on the forehead and a torn up mouth with blood.

Season 2

More evident sores start to appear on the majority of walkers by Season 2. Violently eating a human and covered in blood. Cuts over the body and the eyes are set deeper with again the different eye colour.
Season 3

Evidently the skin has completely changed colour showing obviously where there is no circulation. Patchy skin with multiple colours,, skin is saggy and wrinkling, no hair and eyebrows. Clothes are very battered, eyes are off colour and deep set, mouth area is deteriorating with a lot of blood on him and his clothes.

Season 4

The zombie here has clearly been around for a while and has turned into more of a skeleton as there's not much left on him. Clothing and majority of his skin had deteriorated away from him.

information and photos from: http://moviepilot.com/posts/2014/09/23/ever-notice-this-about-the-walking-dead-s-infected-2292085?lt_source=external,manual

As my character Quentin is being set in the Alexandria safe zone which is in Season 5 Quentin could be extremely deteriorated and not much left on him if he has been a zombie for quite a while. However I'm creating Quentin in Season 5 but he is going to be recently bitten so he won't be extremely decomposed like the older zombies. Quentin will averagely been bitten a month to two months prior to him walking into Alexandria Safe Zone therefore he will have characteristics of being human however his skin is a deathly colour, the eyes have changed and also deep set, the face is cut up and covered in blood, his hair is still there however greasy and dirty.

Make-up Face chart ideas:

Here I experimented with another face chart for my Quentin character. I used elements that were shown in the top video where Greg Nicotero and Andy Schoneberg created a zombie looks such as the oats and latex on the face. I started with contouring the face with a grey/green/tan colour to get the skin colour and then applied products on top however if creating this chart on a person the make-up would go different than creating it on paper. On the face I wanted to use a mix of latex products and geletine to create the scaring and uneven skin. Then over I would apply the skin tone and contour the face, then add colour to he wounded/infected area and then add the blood.

World War Z (2013, Action, Adventure, Horror):
United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.

The Zombies:
The zombies In the Film World War Z were portrayed slightly different that the original book portrayed them. The zombie in the film seem slightly more clever, respond to noise and definitely move around a lot more and were a lot quicker. The gore wasn't as heavy as there wasn't as much blood covering them. In the film they seemed quite fast and strong and only wanted the healthy living.

Warm Bodies (2013, Comedy, Horror, Romance):

After a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

The Zombies:
The zombie take in this movie is slightly different than any other, the zombies start by killing and eating people however they start slowly becoming more human like learning there traits and controlling there hunger. Firstly they don't speak however they learn to speak and start acting more human, There look is still very zombie like with the washed out skin tone, deep eye with a dead like skin complexion. There clothes are torn and dirty however theses zombies are much more human like, there is blood when killing people however when they learn to become more human there isn't much blood on them at all.

Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the UK, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.

The zombies:

In this 2002 horror film the infected keep there human trait . There faces and features are all still human however they have crazy red eyes and are completely covered in blood. It started with a raging virus. It firstly starts with killing its victims then reanimates them as living dead. While they are not totally mindless, however they do seem to be mindless and not knowing whats going on.  In 28 days they do not feed on flesh and they are quite fast so some can agree to disagree if this a different type of zombie as they are classed to be loosely similar to the typical cinematic zombie.

Contemporary Victorian Hairstyles inspired by American Horror story

http://www.albionmill.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/fanart-250487-4.jpg

Curling and gripping

 Equipment:

 • curlers
 • hair brush
 • pin tail comb
 • grips
 • Afro comb
Steps:
Where they will be placed-
 • side parting
 • work with the direction of hair
 • 3 curls going up and 2 on the side (left hand side)
 • 2 going up and 3 on the side (right hand side)
 • Brick work at the back (only the first layer)
 • 1 roll at the crown of the head
 • 3/4 going down the back (not brick work anymore)

 1. First section by the parting at the top, not too wide or deep, work away from the hair for lift. Curl the hair up so the tongs are directly on top. Then place a kurby grip to the head to hold the curl. This is the left side of the head so we need 3 of theses.
 2. On the other side we need 2 of theses, so create exactly the same, use pin tail to help hair sagging.
 3. At the crown create 1 curl right at the top, lift for volume and then below do brick work ( 2 rolls next to each other and then 1 roll below). Stop brickwork here. The carry on until the neck with rolls going downwards.
 4. Go back to the side section where the ears are, and curl the hair inwards to the face. Curl the rest of the sides like brick work only because the sections are quite big. Do this to both sides.
 5. Next take all of the grips out where you put them in the curls, the best filler for gaps is a bit of back combing.
 6. Use an afro comb to brush the curls through

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Style one:
 1. Start by the ear and start twisting the hair into itself (not a victory roll). If you start with the left hand side and twist it until near the middle and then grip down and across to hold it.
 2. The start on the other side by the ear and start twisting that round until they nearly meet and then grip it in place.
 3.  Lastly the middle section at the back, start rolling the middle part up on itself and then grip into place.
 4. Next start on the top section of the hair pulling the front of the head curl down and seeing where it falls, then place it neatly over the hair and grip lightly into place. You want movement around the hairline.
 5. Then with the other front curls build up the curls. You want the front main curl to slightly dip over the forehead and to show volume.
 6. Then with the other side of the hair do the same, can start looking slightly like finger waves around the front.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Style two- soft waves:

 1. Start with taking all of the grips out from the previous style.
 2. The grab a hair brush and start brushing through the curls, making sure you brush on top of the hair and the underneath part.
 3. While brushing use hands to direct the hair and give it flow.
 4. Once your happy with the look of the curls you can use a shine spray to finalize the look.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Style three- messy/voluminous hair:

 1. For this look there's no using a brush its purely brush your fingers through the hair, fluffy it up and shaking the head around to give voluminous curly hair with a messy look to the style

Overall I really enjoyed creating the three styles and I really enjoyed learning a new curling technique. I found curling the hair and gripping it was the hardest part as it quite hard to make sure the hair doesn't sag, if the curls are going it the right direction, if the rolls are secure and making sure the curlers are directly on top of the curl so there's no drop in the hair. However I was releaved when I finally had the whole head curled and it looked wonderful up all neat and in its position. Then creating the first style was definitely my favourite I loved the way the curls fell into place and you had to grip it where necessary. However creating the twist/roll following the bottom of the hair sounds easy however it was actually quite tricky to make the hair completely flow round. Overall I really enjoyed the lesson, the time frame was a little challanging however I managed to complete all the looks in time.

Health and safety:
 • Make sure you always keep on eye on hot equipment such as heated tongs and where they are placed
 • Keep hair tied back and minimum jewellery
 • Do not run in the studio
 • Be aware of your surroundings (equipment cables)
 • Keep bags and coats away tidy

Dark Eyes and Lips

Darkest of the Dark

In our recent make-up lesson we were looking at Dark and and lips where we had to bring in a photograph of our choice to work from to create this look. Firstly our make-up lecturer Fenella showed us a demonstration of how to create a classic smokey eye look and the look normally should contain at least three colours to work with.

Tips by Fenella:

 • Always be neat
 • Its easier to do the eyes before the base make-up (foundation) because then you dont have to worry about powders dropping on the face
 • Keep blending, no harsh lines
 • You'll need to be quick when doing TV make-up as you might have at least 10 peoples make-up to do
 • Keep the eyes open every so often to see what it looks like because the main view will be when its open
 • Translucent powder under the eyes to catch the eye shadow if you have done the base before
 • Cream eye shadows first then always powders after

My own look

Eyes and lips inspiration
Products:

 • Charles Fox eye shadow palette
 • sleek lipstick (matte vamp)
 • Charles Fox blusher palette (red and brown)
 • Avon Glimmerstick for eyes (soft black)
 • Gold gel
 • white base foundation
 • Maybelline lip liner (midnight plum)
 • Illamasqua neutral palette (gold)

Eyes:

 1. Firstly I started with applying a  liquid white base foundation all the lid and into the brows before setting it with white powder before applying the actual colour.
 2. Once the whole eye had its base, I started with the red and created the whole base red all the way up every so slightly past the eyebrow. I then brought the red down and followed it down the cheekbone and contoured the cheek and temples with the same red.
 3. I then worked into the corner of the eyes and created a line from the corner of the eye to the top of the brow
 4. Next was working in with the brown colour, I mixed the brown with a bit of the red powder and worked into the corner of the eye, just under the brow, and on the lash line.
 5. I then used a dark gold powdered eye shadow and brushed over the brown with the gold.
 6. I then used the Avon Glimmerstick and drew on a eyebrow line above my partners original eyebrow.
 7. Next with the same glimmerstick I drew along the lid (by the lashes) and then created a flick going out at the corner of the eye.
 8. Next I used a gold gel and placed it in the corner of the eye.

Lips:

 1. Firstly I started with lining the top lip and the center bit of the bottom lip.
 2. I then used a lip brush and the matte vamp colour lipstick and filled in the entire top lip and small amount in the center of the bottom lip.
 3. I then used the same gold gel I used on the eyes and drew small lines in the center of the bottom lip and the bottom of the top lip.

Overall Iv'e very happy with the look I created, as me and my partner had to swap over I didn't have time to complete both eyes. However I preferred concentrating on perfecting one eye than rushing to create both. My inspiration was the photo right at the top, I used elements from the look however as our theme was dark eyes and lips I chose to change the colours around by using red, black, brown and gold. I think I could improve on my blending on the eyes more and maybe created more of a shape however for creating this first time from looking at a photo I think I did quite well. The lips came out nicely however in the photo her lips are more draw on in the center and look slightly more dramatic however this was my own interpretation.

Health and safety:
 • keep products clean and tidy
 • make sure you place the lid straight back on any products
 • keep model covered to protect clothing from products
 • don't run in the studio
 • keep bags away tidy
 • make sure of no cross contamination

Introduction to my Quentin

How Quentin fits into the series is that he is a walker. At a point in the series when everyone is living inside Alexandria walls, during the evening someone was closing the gate and it didn’t close properly and a walker got into the premises. Its was dark and everyone was in there houses sleeping when Quentin approaches Claudia’s door. Claudia instantly hears a noise and opens the door to the zombie, she is completely delusional and psychotic and thinks the zombie is Quentin. She then lets him in and realises he is grabbing at her and trying to bite her however she thinks its in a playful way and wants to make sure he can’t ever leave her again so she ties the zombie up and no-one knows she keeping him there.

Obviously the make-up is really advanced and the audience is in awe of how realistic it looks. However they never develop a bond with a zombie because they are usually killed off very quick. He’ll be seen as more of a human introducing a different element to the series.

The setting has been really influential for building up Quentin as an individual character. The constraints given have really been explored and Quentin has come out as a character in his own. As Quentin is a walker his look is very detailed and I will be needing a lot of prosthetic products to create the look and a lot of special effects to create this particular character. The styling will be inspired by a collaboration of different zombie looks from the walking dead. I can then gather ideas of what effect Quentin should have on his face and consider his clothing and hair.

Key word for Development-
http://www.buyzombie.com/wp-content/
uploads/2011/03/zombies-eating.jpg
I have chosen taste as my key word because when going from being a human and then turning into a zombie your mind has been completely wiped and all you’re thinking about is eating human flesh and blood. Their craving for it is so strong they can smell the difference between a human and a walker. Their taste and craving is the only thing still alive in them as their brain is overtaken by the virus.

The key word taste inspired me to look into other films that have the same cravings as zombies. Popular films with this sort of context is films like Dracula or mainly any vampire films. Vampires also have a strong craving for blood the only difference is they don’t eat the rest of the human. However the human does then turn into one of them.

His character motivation as a zombie is purely to eat Claudia however she sees this in a completely different way. My character will be styled as a zombie, with prosthetic pieces on the face, light blue/yellow eyes that are blood shot, greasy hair, dirty and covered in blood. The teeth would be rotten and decaying and his clothes torn up.

I will need to start planning the prosthetic pieces for the face and start planning garments, and allocating all the required equipment and products.

Quentin Character Mood board and Colour Palette
In the mood board I created for my Quentin character I chose a variety of images that I thought would firstly portray how I think of what Quentin will look like. All of the photos I chose are photographs of zombies that were created in the actual walking dead. Since I want to source photos to create the look I mainly looked into previous characters or zombies that were shown in the series. As each zombie is created individual the looks for them are completely different, I want Quentin to be a bit cut up on the face with blood, deep eyes and a deathly skin colour, Quenin isnt an old zombie so he wont be rotting too much as some of the make-up is very extreme. The images I have collaged together is inspiration for his overall look. As this is my first take on what he will look like, I will need to create more face charts and an overall look for him to narrow my idea down.

Make-up Face Chart
This is my first Face chart for Quentin, I created this on my basic idea of what I want him to look like. I want prosthetics on the face where skin will be coming off and covered in blood. I want scratches over the face and bloody cracked lips. I want his skin colour to be light with a tint of green/grey. The eyebrows hardly visible, the eyes bloodshot and contacts in the eyes to change the colour and the eye sockets deep and contoured.  The hair I want messy and greasy with either blood or dirt in it. Overall he need to be slightly dirty as he is living outside and he is slowly decomposing.

Introduction to my Claudia

http://www.nerdacy.com/wp-content/
uploads/2015/03/Screenshot-178.jpg
Claudia fits into the series when the group of survivors reach the Alexandria Safe-Zone in the Episode ‘The Distance’. Alexandria is a walled-off community which is located in Virginia, near Washington, D.C. Claudia is one of the residences in the safe-zone, she has locked herself inside her house and has no contact with the rest of the group. She fantasises about being the main character in her favourite horror films, unfortunately she no longer needs to pretend as she’s living in a real life zombie apocalypse. She has agoraphobia which is an anxiety disorder. She starts going crazy and starts self harming and begins wondering where her imaginary ‘boyfriend’ is and why he hasn't visited her. This is an element I have added to the character to fit her into the setting in a more believable manner.

She keeps in touch with the rest of the group by her neighbour who is also a survivor. Darkness falls and everyone is in their houses sleeping when a zombie approaches Claudia’s door. Claudia instantly hears the noise and opens the door to the zombie, she is completely delusional and psychotic and thinks the zombie is Quentin. She then lets him in even though he is grabbing at her and trying to bite her however being naïve she believes it is in a playful way and wants to make sure he cant ever leave her again so she ties him up and due to her lack of contact with the group no-one knows she is keeping him there.

Due to the audiences largest proportion being women they will relate to Claudia on an emotional level. Many women have experienced some form of Claudia’s character therefore they’ll be more sympathetic to her situation. Being in her early 20’s the older viewers will aspire to have physical traits.

My Key word for development-

I chose the key word glass prison because not only is she in a physical prison in the world she is living in. She is also in a mental prison to herself because of her state of mind and thoughts. It has inspired me to investigate how other leading characters that are women suffer from similar disorders and how they’re presented in modern literature.

Looking into how women are described in books, due to not having a visual reference, language is used very poetically to portray women.

The scene Claudia will be in is just after when the main group of survivors reach Alexandria, Claudia doesn't appear out in the day time because she doesn't leave her house. When the gates to Alexandria are accidently left open a walker comes into the community, when the walker appears at Claudia door she opens it thinking he is Quentin. She brings the walker into her house mistaking him for her imaginary boyfriend. She then keeps him tied up in her house where no one knows. The setting of where Claudia is during the scene is in her house because where she has an anxiety disorder she and is unsociable so she never leaves her house. I want to style Claudia as quite a typical young girl in her 20’s with brunette hair. If you looked at her she would look like just any average 20 year old girl however with her lack of horror films and communication she has cuts over her body where she self harms. Her hair is scraggly and her body, face and clothes are dirty from the lack of washing, her lips are dry and sore, probably bleeding.

I want to develop Claudia further, creating charts and designs for her hands, body and clothing so the whole look is brought together. Before creating Claudia I want to practise the look so I know I can create it and what it will look like when shooting. I also need to find a model for Claudia.

Claudia Character Mood board and colour palette
In my mood board representing Claudia I chose a variety of images which I best thought would portray Claudia. I started off with a picture of a young woman in her 20's as this is base line of what Claudia looks like; typical average girl. The next along represents how she self harms and is psychotic therefore cutting herself with glass. The next image is a photo of one of the characters from the walking dead about to attack another this is to represent I certain situations and lifestyle you can turn slightly crazy and be unknown to what you are doing. The next image is of a girl holding a knife, this is to portray how crazy she is physically and has that look in her eye. The next one is a young woman who is a character in The Walking Dead series overall I have gathered inspiration from this photo physically because of the ways she looks ie slightly messy hair and dirty skin, showing she hadn't washed. The next image is inspiration for the cut she will have on her neck. The photo of the house is what her house would look like in the safe-zone; boarded up. The photos of the 5 women at the bottom are characters from the series, I used this photo as inspiration for overall looks such as the clothing, weapons and getting and idea of what they would look like during an apocalypse.

Make-up chart
This was the face chart I created for my first initial idea for Claudia. When gathering the images for the mood board it helped me create an idea for Claudias look. I wanted the base of the make-up very simple and natural so you cant tell she's wearing make-up as it is an apocalypse. On the neck I wanted scratches/cuts going up as this is where she self harms, on the face I wanted it slightly dirty and hot looking since its warm season and there is limited water. I wanted a slight bruises and cut on her cheek because where she is delusional she sometimes blacks out and she's hurt herself. The hair is mid length and brown, its slightly wavy and a little dirty/greasy. I have decided if I want half the hair tied up in a knot or just to leave it completely down.
