I
have really enjoyed the Gothic Horror Unit because I feel it’s given me an
opportunity to create multiple different looks and explore a variety of skills.
Great Expectations was a diverse way to introduce characters and challenged us
to develop our own concept of them through make-up and hair development. The Victorian
background research and technical lessons provided me with historic knowledge
for both characters. Incorporating a continuity assessment really challenged my
skills in make-up application and being able to assemble continuity notes to
recreate the whole look, as this is an important factor in the TV and Film
industry. This definitely tested my skills when creating the look for a second
time making sure all products and materials were the same. I felt with the
continuity I had to keep my design fairly simple due to recreating it. I felt I
could have explored and developed Miss Havisham more, I think I need to work on
exploring the character further and experimenting more with different designs
and looks. Estella’s character I felt quite restrained as the look had to be historically
correct and she doesn't portray many sides of her personality so I felt a
little tied down on what to create for her character. Overall I enjoyed reading
the book even though I found it a little confusing, and also watching different
TV and Film portrayals of the novel as it was really interesting to see the
difference in character hair and make-up.
The
second part to the unit was creating to characters to fit into a chosen series
of our choice. I definitely enjoyed this section the most even though the time
frame for ideas, developing and creation was very short I really enjoyed
exploring a TV series and creating whatever look we wanted. Background research
to the series and exploring previous characters helped influence my final
design so my two characters would correctly fit into the series. My Quentin
character was definitely more of a challenge than Claudia because the look contained prosthetics on the face which the application was quite hard. I think the challenge was exciting and I was extremely pleased with the outcome of both looks. I
think I could have developed a little more however the time frame was short and
practising had to be done beforehand. I think I could have practised a little
more beforehand especially on my Quentin character and done a full practise
before the actual assessment to make sure everything went smoothly. I feel I
could improve on my management so I make sure assessment are completed in the allocated
time frame. Working to the brief was hard in certain areas however I enjoyed
exploring looks, developing my character and designing a completed hair,
make-up and costume and doing background research. Overall I’m very happy with
the outcome of the unit and I look forward to what’s coming next.
