Final Quentin Make-up and Hair

THE WALKING DEAD
Quentin

How I created it

Make-up:
Products-
 • Gelatine (mixed with glycerine)
 • Liquid Latex
 • Tissue
 • Charles Fox foundation palette
 • Charles Fox supra colour palette
 • baby oil
 • Charles Fox blusher palette
 • Bloody Scab
 • Liquid blood
 • Oats
 • Black/grey tooth stain
 1. Firstly I started with applying the Gelatine to the face, I pre made the gelatine so all I had to do was put the blocks in a bowl and put it in the microwave for 8 seconds to melt it down. Once it melted down I used a spatula and started applying it onto the face and layering it up. I used a cool hairdryer to dry the gelatine without melting it. I started on the cheeks and applying the gelatine down the neck and the sides of the neck, on the ears and the temples of the dead.
 2. Once it was all dry I mixed the latex with the oats and starting applying it to the top of the head and on the side of neck. I then used a sponge and more latex to go over both areas again to make sure it holds and blends in. I then used the hair dryer on cool again to dry both areas.
 3. Once the whole face was dry I used a mix of a light foundation, green and black supra colour and a drop of oil. I mixed it all together and put over the whole of the face including neck, ears, back of neck.
 4. I then used a mix of black and white supra colour around the socket of the eyes and temples to look sunken in.
 5. I then started working into the oats ands latex area, which I used a mix of green for the base, then grey for depth and red supra colour on top. I did this on the forehead area and neck.
 6. Next was to fill in some areas with thick scabby blood, I placed it around the oats on the head and neck. I then used a spatula to pick away an area at the bridge of the nose and filled it with blood and then the same on the cheek. I also put blood in the hair line at the top.
 7. Next was the liquid blood which will be dripping of the face, I used this on the oats, around the mouth, on the forehead and then used my finger to smudge random blood on the face.
 8. I also used the red supra colour under the eyes.
 9. To make him look slightly dirty I used a brown blusher and applied over the face and on the neck/ears.
 10. For the hands I used the brown powder over the hands and then covered them in liquid blood, I also used the black tooth stain on the finger nails to make them look dirty.

Try and Fail-
A week beforehand I bought some long lasting coloured contacts to put in the eyes of my model. I thought it would complete the look as one of the reasons you can tell the trait of the character being a walker in the series is when they first wake you notice there eyes change and it looks super creepy. I thought this would complete and finalise my look. I asked my model before buying them if he had worn contacts before and would be able to wear them on the day which he said he has and that's perfectly fine. However on the day of creating my look before starting the make-up (in case his eyes leaked) we tried to put the contacts in.. however it was a mega struggle and when he got one in it felt really uncomfortable and he said he couldn't wear them. Therefore in my final look he is not wearing the contacts dues to irritation reason.

Hair:
Equipment-
 • Brush
 • Shine Serum
 • Conditioner
 1. I squeezed a blob of conditioner in my hand and worker it through the hair.
 2. I then used the brush to brush the hair backwards so it was messy.
 3. I then used a shine serum as its really greasy and worked it through the hair to make it greasier.

In progress of the make-up.. before all the blood and horror.

Editing

I started experimenting with editing my photos which I really enjoyed as the look is really creative and fun to experiment with. I edited the eyes so the whites are slightly bloodshot and the eye colour is lighter. How I did this was I cloned a section of the skin and layered it over the eye with a low opacity. I then used the liquify tool to bring the temples of the head in. I also played around with the skin and texture. I also darkened the photo, used a variety of tints over the image which was the cooling tint, green tint and emerald. I also changed the saturation, brightness, vibrance made the image darker with the curves tool. On both photos I inserted different background and the logo title of the series.

Final Evaluation
I was a little worried on the day about creating this look as the base of the face was built with latex, tissue and gelatine so I was hoping it would all go to plan on the day. I felt I could have practiced the look one final time again before the real thing just to make sure it went smoothly. This was definitely one of the hardest looks I’ve created with it containing so much detail and effect with prosthetics. However creating something so extreme was so much fun and experimenting with products to use on the face. Creating the chart and designing the look was really exciting trying out different looks and the research was very interesting. I really enjoyed looking at the background of the make-up created for the walking dead and also watching videos of the make-up artists creating looks and giving vital tips and information about the look and products you can use. I found background researching really impacted and helped the outcome of my final look. Creating such an interesting character for Quentin evened out the make-up and gave me a variety of techniques to work with and show different skills. Designing the make-up and styling the look was enjoyable as it was fun to create the character as a whole bringing together hair, make-up and clothing styling. I found the look challenging and had a few problems such as the contacts wouldn't go in and I found the gelatine hard to work with, also the look took slightly longer to create than I originally thought.
