As my Estella character assessment is approaching fast I've starting looking at different hair designs I could explore for the creation of my final Estella look. The first design I found inspiration from the original character Estella portrayed in the 2012 film by Mike Newell. I look aspects from the hair design and brought it together with the designs we've done in class to create an overall hair design.

Drawn hair designEquipment-
  • Hairspray
  • pintail comb
  • comb
  • brush
  • small curling tongs

I started with sectioning the hair into a middle parting and then sectioning the hair down the side to separate where I wanted the front curls and the rest pulled back into a bun. I sectioned this down in line with the ear on both sides equal. I then gathered all the hair at the back and put it into a high pony for the time being.

On the first side of the fringe I sectioned the hair into three parts as there will be 3 curls on each side of the head. This parting was going across the side of the head instead of sectioning 3 down. I grabbed the first section while clipping the other two up out of the way, and grabbed my pre heated curling tongs but the ends of the hair in the tongs and rolled upwards to create a tight ringlet curl to the head. I then brought down the second section and curled this in the same direction, this was all the curls rolling upwards. Finally was the last strand and the I did the exact same on the other side of the head. To hold each curl tight and secure to the head I gripped each one closely to the scalp so the curls didn't drop and then hair sprayed it in place.

As for the back of the head I took down the pony tail and sectioned the hair so half of the hair was up and the other half down however bringing the sides up from the bottom so it was only a thin section being left down. I then place the top part in a pony tail and then span the hair around the ponytail to create a flat wide bun and held in place with grips. I then grabbed my curling tongs again and starting curling individual strands from the bottom half of the head until it was all completely curled. I then used my pin tail comb to separate the bottom curls and then hair sprayed the whole design in place.

I really like this hair style iv'e created for Estella, I think it represents the later years of Estella's life so more mid-late Victorian. The later Victorian styles are usually more elaborate and the curls are normally further towards the back of the hair. The style I've created I've taken influences from a previous Estella design from the 2012 film and added my own style to the design to create something slightly different. I really like this style as its quite a high class style and has different types of curls going through the hair, I think this style will really work well with the Estella character and its a possible idea for a hairstyle I might use for the character.

For my second design I started looking into mid-Victorian hairstyles that were suitable for the character of Estella. I wanted something slightly different and a bit more involving curls and ringlets at the back of the hair. After seeing some inspiring hairstyles on the internet of mid Victorian styles I gathered together what I liked and created this style. My inspiration came mainly from this photo which shows a variety of Victorian styles, you can tell theses are upper class hairstyles because they are very elaborate styles which on the wealthy could afford detailed well-structured hairstyles are they had the time and money. Estella being adopted by a wealthy lady had the privilege of being in this class therefore hairstyles could be more elaborate. The variety of images show that most of the styles curls are at the back of the head which was a mid-late Victorian style as earlier in the century the curls were at the front of the head.

Estella Hair design

Equipment:

  • Hair brush
  • Comb
  • Brown grips
  • Small curling tongs
  • Hairspray
As the entire back of the hair is going to be curly I started with leaving the hair down and curling parts of it so when its gripped up the majority of it is curled and then I can just add to it. I pre heated my small curling tongs, and and curled the back of the hair.

Next I gripped half of the hair up and clipped in a few brown hair extensions mid way at the back to lengthen the hair for the design. If I take forward this hair design forward for my assessment on Estella my partner I'm working on has long hair anyway so not extensions will be needed in her hair, however I wanted the full effect for this look of the Kate head. After gripping them in I used my heated curling tongs to curl the extensions and a few more strands at the back. Once these were curled I used my grips and my hair brush and scrapped the hair back and clipped it into place and then hair sprayed it. I then used multiple grips to manipulate the curls and grip them into place.

Finally I brushed the ends of the hair, brought it all together and curled it into one large ringlet at the end. I then curled any other strands that were left and gripped up any parts left. I then hair sprayed the whole design to hold it in place.

Overall I think I prefer this design to the first style I created, I think this is because this style looks more sophisticated and would suit the character Estella. With this design I could also add accessories to this design such as flower, feathers or comb/broach to the hair as this was very popular in the Victorian era.
